穴埋め英作文1・2・3（作文151回）　ありがとう・ごめん・日本はかつて～

水曜日は「英作文」の日。日々の生活の中でよく使う言い回しを英語で表現してみましょう。練習は三つのパート（穴埋め問題）に分かれています。それでは始めましょう。

【Part 1】
日本語の意味になるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。

1. Thanks. You're a (　　　).
→ありがとう。助かった。

2. You always see right (　　　) me.
→何でもお見通しなんだ。

3. That sounds like (　　　) in the sky to me.
→それって絵に描いた餅みたいだよね。

1. lifesaver「命を救ってくれる人」。Thanks. You saved my life.とも言えます。
2. see (right) through「見透かす」。rightは強調するための副詞です。I can't hide anything from you.「君には何も隠せないね」も一緒に覚えておきましょう。
3.「絵に描いた餅」にはpie in the skyという決まり文句があります。（例）His idea seemed like pie in the sky to me.「彼の考えは私には絵に描いた餅のように思えた」。

aとbが同じ意味になるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。

4. a. Sorry, I didn't mean to grumble.
b. Sorry, I just couldn't (　　　) griping.
→ごめん、つい愚痴を言っちゃって。

5. a. Where did you buy a ticket to?
b. How (　　　) can you go on that ticket?
→どこまでの切符を買ったの？

4. grumble「不平をこぼす」、gripe「愚痴を言う」。mean to ～「～するつもり」。can't help ～ingで「つい～してしまう」という意味。（例）I couldn't help laughing.「つい笑ってしまった」。
5. 「どこまで」をHow farで表現。（例）How far along are we?「どれくらい来たのかな？」。Where ～ to?のtoとon that ticketのonに注目。

日本語の意味になるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。最初の文字が与えられています。

→日本はかつて平和な国だと言われていたが、すでに危険な国になっていると思う。

【解答】past, told, peace-loving, dangerous

【解説】
In the past「過去において」。be told that ～「～と言われる」。（例）I was told by a customer that our store is less expensive than the others.「お客さんにうちのお店の方が他のお店より安いと言われた」。peace-loving「平和を愛する」の代わりにpeaceful「平和な」も使えます。dangerous「危険な」。We've been told for quite some time that Japan is a peaceful country, but I think it's already become a dangerous one.でも同じような意味になります。

can't help ～ingを使った例文をいくつか挙げておきましょう。

I can't help going back to sleep.
→つい二度寝してしまう。
I guess parents can't help being biased.
→それはまさに親の欲目だね。
Lately I can't help feeling concerned about him.
→最近、彼のことが気になって仕方ない。
He can't help acting big when women are around.
→彼は女性が回りにいると偉そうにする。
I can't help buying new products when they first come out.
→新製品が出るとついつい買いたくなる。
