穴埋め英作文1・2・3（作文149回）　写実的な絵・別れる運命・切れる社員が多い～

水曜日は「英作文」の日。日々の生活の中でよく使う言い回しを英語で表現してみましょう。練習は三つのパート（穴埋め問題）に分かれています。それでは始めましょう。

【Part 1】
日本語の意味になるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。

1. I prefer more (　　　) paintings.
→もっと写実的な絵のほうが私は好きです。

2. I've got to (　　　) clients tonight.
→今夜はクライアントの接待か。

3. It's not always (　　　) pleasant here, is it?
→ここはいつもこんなに快適ではないんでしょう。

【解説】
1. prefer ～「～の方が好き」。more realistic「より現実的な」で「写実的な」を表現。（例）You're not looking at the world realistically.「君は現実的な目で世界を見ていない」。
2.「接待する」とはentertain「もてなす、楽しませる」ことですね。（例）Entertaining clients is a fixed ritual in many countries.「接待は多くの国で当たり前のように行われている」。
3. この場合のthisは「こんなに」という意味の副詞として使われています。（例）If it's this hard at the beginner's level, I hate to think what's next.「初心者レベルでこんなに難しいなんて、先が不安だな」。

【Part 2】
aとbが同じ意味になるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。

4. a. It was our fate to split up.

→僕たちは別れる運命だったんだよ。

5. a. Living alone sure isn't easy.
b. There's (　　　) easy about living alone.
→一人暮らしってなにかと大変なんだよね。

4. be meant to ～で「～する運命である」という意味。（例）In a sense, you and I were meant to meet.「私たちには縁があったのよ」。「別れる」はsplit up, break upで表現できます。
5. There's nothing easy about ～「～は簡単ではない」の使い方がポイント。（例）There's nothing wrong with crying.「泣いたっていいじゃないか」。

日本語の意味になるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。最初の文字が与えられています。

→最近は切れる社員が多いので、うかつに叱れやしない。

【解答】employees, lose, give, scolding

【解説】
employee「従業員、社員」。「切れる」をlose one's temper easilyで「すぐにかっとなる」で表現しています。give them a good talking「彼らをたっぷり叱りつける」。動詞にgiveを使っている点に注目。（例）Why don't you give him a hand?「彼を手伝ったら？」。
