第148回

木曜日は「英文法」の日。Practice before theory.「理屈より実践」。さまざな例文を参考にして、使える英文法を身につけましょう。今回は基本動詞Turnを取り上げます。

◆Turnを使いこなす！ (2)◆
日常会話の中でよく用いられる例文を五つ挙げてみます。

【リピーティング】
英文11～15をリピートしましょう。

11. I have to turn this report in today.
→今日、この報告書を提出しないと。
12. How did everything turn out?
→どうだったの？
13. I turned around and he was already gone.
→振り向くと、彼はもういなかった。
14. I don't want this to turn into a police matter.
→これを警察沙汰にはしたくないの。
15. You should turn that job down flat.
→その仕事はきっぱりと断った方がいいよ。



▽解説・穴埋め

【解説】
11. turn in「提出する」。（例）We have to turn it in. That's a matter of course.「それを提出しなくちゃいけないんだよ。当然のことだけど」。
12. turn out ～「（結果として）～になる、～だとわかる」。（例）You never know how things will turn out.「どうなるかわからないからね」。
13. turn around「振り返る」。（例）You'll never guess where I am right now. ... Turn around!「今どこにいると思う？振り返ってみて！」。
14. turn into a police matter「警察沙汰になる」。（例）This area turned into a ghost town.「この地域はゴーストタウンに化した」。
15.「断る」はturn downで表現します。flat(ly)が「きっぱり、にべもなく」に当たる副詞。（例）You should turn it down in no uncertain terms.「きっぱりと断るべきです」。

日本語の意味なるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。

【解説】
16. fail to ～「～するのに失敗する」。turn in ～ on timeで「～を時間通りに提出する」という意味。（例）I have to turn in the estimate within the week.「見積もりを今週中に出さなければならない」。
17. I have a feeling ～「～のような気がする」。「こうなる」はturn out this way、「そうなる」はturn out that wayで表現します。（例）I guess things don't always turn out as planned.「計画した通りには行かないものだよね」。
18. turn things around「物事を回転させる」で「 話をごちゃごちゃにしている」を表現。（例）You're turned around.「（言っていることが）逆だよ」。
19. cold「風邪」、get worse「悪化する」。turn into pneumoniaで「肺炎になる」という意味。turnの代わりにdevelopも使えます。
20. ask out「デートに誘う」。asked her out、turned me downの語順に注意。（例）I don't know why she turned it down.「どうしてそれを断ったのかわからない」。

→会議は怒鳴り合いになった。
I didn't want to get involved, so I just turned away.
→関わりたくなかったので、目をそらした。
It's not a good idea to turn your hobby into a career.
→趣味を職業にしない方がいい。
It turned out to be a lot more interesting than I'd expected.
→思っていたより面白かった。
Why don't you turn him down, saying you're busy or whatever.
