木曜日は「英文法」の日。Practice before theory.「理屈より実践」。さまざな例文を参考にして、使える英文法を身につけましょう。今回は基本動詞Turnを取り上げます。

◆Turnを使いこなす！ (1)◆
日常会話の中でよく用いられる例文を五つ挙げてみます。

【リピーティング】
英文1～5をリピートしましょう。

1. Turn right at the next traffic light.
→次の信号で右に曲がって。
2. Today I turn twenty.
→今日で二十歳になりました。
3. You've come too far to turn back now.
→ここまで来たらもう後戻りはできない。
4. Turn on the ventilation fan.
→換気扇をつけて。
5. I wonder if I turned off the iron.
→アイロンのスイッチを切ったかな。



▽解説・穴埋め

【解説】
1.「右 / 左に曲がる」はturn right / leftで表現できます。（例）I forget. Do I turn right or left at the next intersection?「忘れちゃったよ。次の交差点で右、左どっちに曲がるんだっけ？」。
2.「～歳になる」はbecomeではなくturnを使って表現します。（例）What age does your son turn this year?「息子さんは今年で何歳になりますか？」。
3. turn back「戻る、引き返す」。（例）I got tired of walking and turned back halfway.「歩くのに疲れて、途中で引き返した」。
4. turn on「スイッチを入れる」。（例）How do you turn on this desk lamp?「この電気スタンドはどうやってスイッチを入れるの？」。
5. turn off「スイッチを切る」。（例）Why don't you turn off your smartphone here?「ここではスマホのスイッチを切ったら？」。

【穴埋め】
日本語の意味なるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。

6.「右 / 左に曲がる」はturn to the right / leftやmake a right / leftでも表現できます。makeの代わりにtakeも使えます。Take a right there.「そこで右に曲がって」。
7.「真っ赤になる」をturn bright redで表現しています。（例）He turns nasty when he drinks.「彼は酒癖が悪い」。turn nasty「攻撃的になる、意地悪くなる」。
8. turn back ～「～を戻す」。turn back the hands of the timeで「時計の針を元に戻す」という意味。
9. turn on ～ with the remote「リモコンで～のスイッチを入れる」。「リモコン」はremoteと言います。
10. Are you sure ～?「確かに～？」。turn on / offは電気製品以外、ガスや水道などにも使えます。turn down / up「（明るさや出力などを）上げる / 下げる」も一緒に覚えておきましょう。Turn down the radio, will you?「ラジオのボリュームを下げてくれるかな」。
