木曜日は「英文法」の日。Practice before theory.「理屈より実践」。さまざな例文を参考にして、使える英文法を身につけましょう。今回も基本動詞Keepを取り上げます。

日常会話の中でよく用いられる例文を五つ挙げてみます。

【リピーティング】
英文11～15をリピートしましょう。

11. Keep to the right here.
→ここは右側通行です。
12. Keep at it. I'm rooting for you.
→頑張って。応援してるから。
13. I tried to keep from yawning.
→欠伸を堪えた。
14. I'll keep in touch.
→連絡するから。
15. It's not easy to keep up with younger people.
→若い人たちについて行くのは大変だよ。

【解説】
11. keep to ～「～から離れない」。keep to the right / leftで「右／左側を通る」という意味に。
12. Keep at it.「頑張れ」。Keep it up.も使えます。root for ～「～を応援する」。
13. keep from ～ing「～するのを控える、避ける」。（例）I tried to keep from laughing out loud.「大声で笑わないようにした」。
14. keep in touch「連絡を取り合う」。（例）This website helps you keep in touch with friends.「このウエブサイトは友達と連絡を取るのに役に立つ」。
15.「～について行く」はkeep up with ～で表現します。（例）It's hard for me to keep up with the times.「時代の流れについて行くのは大変」。

日本語の意味なるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。

【解説】
16.「側」はsideで表現。（例）on the right / left side「右／左側」。keep toを使った例文を一つ。（例）I kept to safe topics.「無難な話題から逸れないようにした」。
17. Keep up the good work.「その調子で頑張れ」も覚えておきましょう。see results「結果を見る」で「結果が出る」を表現。（例）Stick to it to the end and you'll get better results.「最後まで頑張れば、いい結果が出る」。
18. keep＋人＋from ～ingで「（人に）～させないようにする」という意味。go senileが「惚ける、耄碌する」に当たる言い回し。（例）Do they have medicine that can keep you from getting colds?「風邪を引かなくする薬ってあるの？」。
19. keep in close touch by e-mail「メールで緊密な連絡を保つ」で「頻繁にメール交換しよう」を表現。closeの発音は［クロゥス］。（例）The best way to get in touch with people abroad is through e-mail.「外国にいる人と連絡を取るのは電子メールが一番いい」。
20.「流れ」はflow（名詞）でします。keep up withを使った次の言い回しも覚えておきましょう。keep up with the Joneses「（見栄を張って）近所の人たちについて行こうとする」。
