木曜日は「英文法」の日。Practice before theory.「理屈より実践」。さまざな例文を参考にして、使える英文法を身につけましょう。今回は基本動詞Keepを取り上げます。

◆Keepを使いこなす！ (1)◆
日常会話の中でよく用いられる例文を五つ挙げてみます。

【リピーティング】
英文1～5をリピートしましょう。

1. You can keep the change.
→お釣りはいいですよ。
2. It's important to keep your promises.
→約束を守ることは大切です。
3. We'll both keep working for a while.
→暫くの間は共稼ぎをします。
4. Why did you keep quiet?
→どうして黙ってたの？
5. I can hardly keep my eyes open.
→目を開けていられない。



▽解説・穴埋め

【解説】
1. keep the change「お釣りを取っておく」。タクシーに乗った時などに使える言い回し。You canを利略してKeep the change.とも言えます。
2. keep one's promise「約束を守る」。「約束を破る」はbreakを使います。（例）If you keep breaking promises, you'll lose people's trust.「約束を破ってばかりいると、信用を落とすよ」。
3. both keep working「二人で働き続ける」で「共稼ぎ」を表現。（例）Keep plugging away!「こつこつ頑張れ！」。
4. keep quiet「静かにしている」。（例）I don't know what to do if you keep quiet.「君が黙っていたら、どうしていいかわからないよ」。
5. keep one's eyes open「目を開けたままにする」。（例）I was so sleepy that I couldn't keep my eyes open.「とても眠くて、目を開けていられなかった」。

6. keep it「それを持ち続ける」で「借りる」を表現。（例）Would you keep this baggage for a while?「少しの間この荷物を預かってもらえますか？」。
7.「公約」はcampaign promisesと言います。（例）You can't trust a politician who thinks nothing of breaking campaign promises.「公約を平気で破る政治家なんて信用できない」。
8. keep coming backの文字通りの意味は「戻り続けてくる」。（例）Lots of bikes keep coming by.「自転車が何台も続けて来るよ。」。
9. don't keep very still「あまりじっとしていられない」。（例）Keep still. OK, you're done.「じっとして。はい、終わりました」。
10. keep ～ so clean「～をとてもきれいに保つ」。secretを使った例文を一つ。（例）I told you to keep it secret, didn't I?「秘密だよって言っただろう」。
