穴埋め英作文1・2・3（作文146回）　やっぱりビール・曲がったこと・景観を損なわない～

水曜日は「英作文」の日。日々の生活の中でよく使う言い回しを英語で表現してみましょう。練習は三つのパート（穴埋め問題）に分かれています。それでは始めましょう。

【Part 1】
日本語の意味になるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。

1. Summer is beer (　　　).
→夏はやっぱりビールだよね。

2. Being stingy will (　　　) people off.
→お金にうるさいと嫌われるよ。

3. My dream is to (　　　) in a musical.
→ミュージカルに出演するのが夢なんだ。

【解説】
1. beer season「ビールの季節」で「やっぱりビール」を表現。Beer is great in the summer.と言ってもいいでしょう。
2. Being stingy「けち、しみったれ（であること）」。turn offは「うんざりさせる、興ざめさせる」という意味。（例）I've only seen her in movies, so I might be turned off when I meet her in person and get a completely different impression.「彼女は映画の中でしか見たことないけど、実際に会ったら全然イメージが違って嫌いになるかもね」。
3. appear「現れる」は「出演する、出場する」という意味でも使えます。（例）All he did was appear on TV one time, and now he's acting like a big shot.「ちょっとテレビに出たくらいで、あいつ大物気取りでいるよ」。

【Part 2】
aとbが同じ意味になるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。

4. a. My father can't stand to be dishonest.
b. My father can't stand (　　　).
→父は曲がったことが嫌なんだよ。

5. a. You'll never get anywhere with that.
b. You'll never get anything (　　　) like that.
→そんなんじゃ全然だめだ。

4. dishonest「不正直な（形容詞）」とdishonesty「不正直（名詞）」を使って「曲がったこと」を表現しています。（例）It's dishonest of you to shirk your responsibility.「責任逃れをするなんてずるいぞ」。この場合のstandは「我慢する、耐える」。
5. never get anywhere / get nowhereは「どうにもならない」。never get anything doneで「何も片づけられない」の意味になります。That'll never work.「それじゃだめだな」も一緒に覚えておきましょう。

日本語の意味になるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。最初の文字が与えられています。

→景観を損なわないように建設と開発が禁止されている区域があります。

【解説】
関係副詞whereの使い方に注目。construction and development「（建物の）建設と開発」。ban「禁止する」、be banned「禁止される」。（例）Smoking is banned in this building.「このビルは禁煙です」。「損なわない」をpreserve「保存する、保護する」で表現しています。

関係副詞whereを使った英文をいくつか挙げておきましょう。

This is the pool where I learned to swim.
→このプールで泳ぎを覚えたんです。
I've got an ugly scab on my knee where I scraped it.
→膝を擦りむいて、ひどいかさぶたになった。
This is the only place in town where you can get real caviar.
→町ではここでしか本物のキャビアは手に入らない。
That empty house has become a place where bad kids loiter around.
→その空き家は不良少年たちのたまり場になってしまった。
That's going to put us in a situation where we're living hand to mouth.
→それでは自転車操業になってしまう。
