音読で英語の筋トレ（音読146回）　建設的批判・新車・エアコン

第146回

月曜日は「音読」の日。早速、英語の筋トレを始めましょう。英文1～3と和訳を読み、音声を聞いてから、繰り返し音読してください。

【音読】
1. 建設的批判

Don't be angry at me.
I'm trying to help you.
Can't you take constructive criticism?

怒らないで。
手伝おうとしてるんだから。
建設的な批判を受け入れられないのか？



2. 新車

I want to buy a new car.
But I know my wife won't let me.
I don't have the courage to ask her.

新車を買いたいんだけど。
でも、妻は買わせてくれないだろうな。
彼女に聞く勇気がない。



3. エアコン

I can't stand days like this.
It's very hot and humid.
Somebody turn on the air conditioner!

こういう日って耐えられない。
蒸し暑いのなんのって。
誰かエアコンをつけて！




▽解説・練習

【解説】 1. be angry at ～「～に怒る」。take constructive criticismで「建設的批判を受け入れる」という意味。（例）Constructive criticism is always welcome.「建設的な批判はいつでも歓迎します」。

《発音アドバイス》
Don't, angry, me, trying, helpにストレス。強弱リズムを意識しましょう。Can't youは［キャンチュウ］。constructive criticismのアクセントの位置に注意（赤字）。

2. won't let meの後にbuy itが省略されています。have the courage to ～「～する勇気がない」。（例）I didn't have the courage to ask her out.「彼女をデートに誘う勇気がなかった」。

《発音アドバイス》
new carを特に強調。But I knowは［バライノゥ］という感じで。won'tは［ウオゥンt］。don't, courage, askにストレス。

3. この場合のstandの意味は「耐える、我慢する」。（例）I can't stand it anymore.「もう我慢できない」。hot and humid「暑くて湿気の多い」で「蒸し暑い」を表現。turn on「スイッチを入れる」。

《発音アドバイス》
standの[æ]に注意。hot and humidは［ホットンヒューミッd］。Somebodyの後に少し間を置きます。turnの[əː]に注意しましょう。

【実践練習】
出だしの語を見て英文1～3を思い出しながら言ってみましょう。

1. 建設的批判 …… Don't - I'm - Can't
2. 新車 …… I - But - I
3. エアコン …… I - It's - Somebody

今日のワンポイント

次の例文を参考にして、stand「耐える、我慢する」の使い方を覚えましょう。

I can't stand being in closed-in spaces.
→狭いところは駄目なんですよ。
You really can't stand the cold, can you?
→本当に寒がりなんですね。
Is there a kind of food you just can't stand to eat?
→嫌いな食べ物はありますか？
I've reached my limit. I can't stand this noise anymore.
→限界だ。この騒音にはもうこれ以上耐えられない。
I can't stand it when people are illogical and incoherent.
→筋の通ってないことは嫌いだ。
