第144回

水曜日は「英作文」の日。日々の生活の中でよく使う言い回しを英語で表現してみましょう。練習は三つのパート（穴埋め問題）に分かれています。それでは始めましょう。

【Part 1】
日本語の意味になるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。

1. This mess has got to be his (　　　).
→こんなに散らかしのは彼の仕業だな。

2. They always (　　　) things on this program.
→あの番組はやらせに決まってる。

3. I'm not a very (　　　) person.
→僕はあまり本を読まないから。

【解説】
1. この場合のdoingは名詞で「仕業、すること」という意味。（例）Is this mess your doing?「こんなに散らかしたのは君か？」。
2. 動詞fakeの意味は「でっちあげる」。This program is always faked.でも同じような意味になります。
3. bookにishを付けて「読書好きの」という意味の形容詞に。a bookworm「本の虫」も一緒に覚えておきましょう。

【Part 2】
aとbが同じ意味になるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。

4. a. I was always late to class in high school.
b. In high school I was almost never on (　　　).
→高校時代、僕は遅刻の常習犯だった。

5. a. Let's talk about this item some other time.
b. We can talk this over (　　　) time.
→その件に関しては、別の機会に話し合いましょう。

5. some other time「別の機会」をanother timeで言い換えています。（例）Could you call back another time?「別の時に電話をかけ直してくれない？」。

日本語の意味になるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。最初の文字が与えられています。

→夏休みに入った途端、うちの息子達は勉強そっちのけで遊んでいる。

soon, starts, forget, nothing

【解説】
as soon as ～ startsで「～が始まった途端」という意味になります。The minute summer vacation beginsと言い換えてもいいでしょう。「そっちのけで」をsuddenly forget all about ～「突然～についてはすべて忘れて」で表現。do nothing but ～「～ばかりする」。（例）You ignore your own problems and do nothing but trash others.「君は自分のことは棚に上げて、人をけなしてばかりいる」。

英文1～3をリピートしましょう。

→できるだけ早く転職したいんです。
Call me as soon as you get to the office.
→会社に着いたらすぐに電話して。
I'll go see you as soon as it's convenient.
→都合がつき次第、そちらに伺います。
I think I'll try it as soon as we get home.
→家に帰ったら早速試してみようっと。
The call went through as soon as I dialed.
→ダイアルしたらすぐに電話が繋がった。
