穴埋め英作文1・2・3（作文142回）　その単語の綴りは？・世の中そんなに甘くない・一夜漬けで勉強した英語は～

水曜日は「英作文」の日。日々の生活の中でよく使う言い回しを英語で表現してみましょう。練習は三つのパート（穴埋め問題）に分かれています。それでは始めましょう。

【Part 1】
日本語の意味になるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。

1. How is that word (　　　)?
→その単語の綴りは？

2. I'll have to (　　　) my wallet.
→財布の中身と相談しないと。

3. This curry has an (　　　) taste.
→このカレーは忘れられない味だね。

1. How do you spell that word?の受け身の文がHow is that word spelled?ですね。spelling（名詞）を使った例文を一つ（例）Don't count on my spelling of this word. I'm not too sure about it.「この単語のスペルは適当だから、あまり当てにしないでね」。
2.「相談する」をconsultで表現。次の流れで英文を覚えておきましょう。Should I buy it or not? I'll have to consult my wallet.「買うか買わないか？財布の中身と相談しないと」。
3. unforgettable「忘れられない、記憶に残る」の使い方に注目。（例）He's unforgettable.「彼のことはいつまでも忘れられない」。

【Part 2】
aとbが同じ意味になるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。

4. a. It's not that simple in the real world.
b. (　　　) aren't so easy in the real world.
→世の中そんなに甘くない。

5. a. Don't withdraw into your shell like that.
b. You need to (　　　) out of your shell.
→そんなに自分の殻に閉じこもってばかりいるなよ。

4. この場合のThingsは「物事、事情」という意味。not that simple / not so easy「そんなに簡単ではない」で「そんなに甘くない」を表現。thatはsimpleを強調する副詞。（例）I'm not that hungry.「それほどお腹はすいていません」。
5. withdraw into～「～に引きこもる」。shell「殻」。break out of one's shellの文字通りの意味は「自分の殻から抜け出す」。（例）Let's save some money to break out of this poverty.「貧乏脱出のためにお金を貯めよう」。

【Part 3】
日本語の意味になるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。最初の文字が与えられています。

6. You can't ( l　　　) much ( b　　　) studying English for just one ( n　　　), so I did ( t　　　) on the TOEIC.
→一夜漬けで勉強した英語は付け焼刃で、TOEICの試験はぼろぼろでした。

【解答】
learn, by, night, terribly

【解説】
「付け焼き刃」をcan't learn much「多くを学べない」、「一夜漬け」をby studying ～ for just one night「～を一晩勉強するだけで」で表現。do terribly on ～「～のできがひどい」。英文全体を次のように言い換えてもいいでしょう。There was no way I could do well on the TOEIC. Studying for a single night just won't cut it.

not that＋形容詞（副詞）を使った英文をいくつか挙げておきましょう。

The building isn't that tall.
→そのビルはそれほど高くない。
Hey, you're not that bad off.
→おい、それほど困ってないだろう。
You shouldn't have worked that hard.
→そんなに頑張らなくてもよかったのに。
It's not that bad. Don't worry about me.
→そんなにひどくないから。心配しないで。
Walking there, I found that it's not that far.
→歩くと、意外と近いんだね。
