水曜日は「英作文」の日。日々の生活の中でよく使う言い回しを英語で表現してみましょう。練習は三つのパート（穴埋め問題）に分かれています。それでは始めましょう。

【Part 1】
日本語の意味になるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。

→早めに夕食を食べよう。

→ばかばかしい。

→彼が言うことって矛盾してない？

1. have an early dinnerで「早めに夕食をとる」という意味。（例）It's a little early for dinner, but let's get something to eat.「夕食にはちょっと早いけど、何か食べようよ」。
2. being ridiculous「ばかげたことを言っている（進行形）」。（例）That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard.「それってまったくばかげてるよね」。
3. contradict oneselfで「矛盾したことを言う」の意味。「矛盾」はcontradictionですね。（例）Isn't that a contradiction?「それって矛盾してない？」。

【Part 2】
aとbが同じ意味になるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。

4. a. She is a person who understands him very well.
b. She understands him (　　　) than most.
→彼女は彼の良き理解者である。

5. a. People aren't looking at you as closely as you think.

→自分が思っているほど人は見てないって。

→デジタル・デバイドとは、情報強者と情報弱者の間に大きな所得格差が生じることである。

【解説】
digital divide「デジタル・ディバイド」。give rise to ～で「～を起こす」という意味。gap「隔たり、相違」とbetweenの使い方に注目。the haves and the have-nots「（情報を）持てる者と持たざる者」で「情報強者・情報弱者」を表現しています。（例）In every society there are the haves and the have-nots.「どの社会にも持てる者と持たざる者がいる」。

動詞noticeを使った英文をいくつか挙げておきましょう。

People notice every move he makes.
→彼の一挙手一投足が注目の的です。
He doesn't seem to notice me at all.
→彼は私のことなんて全然気づいていないと思う。
I didn't even notice my alarm clock go off.
→目覚まし時計が鳴ったのも気づかなかった。
I notice myself getting stressed out now and then.
→時々ストレスがたまっている自分に気づく。
Lately I've noticed I'm getting thicker around the waist.
→最近、お腹の周りに肉がついてきたみたい。
