第140回

木曜日は「英文法」の日。Practice before theory.「理屈より実践」。さまざな例文を参考にして、使える英文法を身につけましょう。今回も基本動詞Takeを取り上げます。

◆Takeを使いこなす！ (2)◆
日常会話の中でよく用いられる例文を五つ挙げてみます。

【リピーティング】
英文11～15をリピートしましょう。

11. It's too late to take it back.
→撤回するには遅すぎる。
12. Everybody says that I take after my father.
→みんなが僕は父親似だと言う。
13. When will the entrance ceremony take place?
→入学式はいつ行われるんだい？
14. I'm going to take part in the seminar this weekend.
→今週末のセミナーに参加するつもりだ。
15. I'll take care of your cats while you're away.
→君が留守の間、僕が猫の世話をするよ。



▽解説・穴埋め

【解説】
11. take back「取り消す、取り戻す」。（例）He had to take back that comment.「彼はそのコメントを撤回しなくてはならなかった」。too ～ toにも注目。
12. take after ～「～に似ている」。（例）Who do you take after, your mother or your father?「君は誰に似ているの、お母さん、それとも、お父さん？」。
13. take place「行われる、起こる」。「入学式」はentrance ceremony、「卒業式」はcommencementですね。
14.「～に参加する」はtake part in ～でも表現できます。join「参加する」を使った例文も挙げておきましょう。I want you to join the party tonight.「今夜のパーティーに参加してほしいんだけどな」。
15. take care of ～「～の世話をする、面倒を見る」。（例）Let me take care of it.「それは僕に任せて」。

日本語の意味なるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。

→その点で彼女は母親に似ている。

【解説】
16.「懐かしい」をtake backで表現。動詞がtakesなので、付加疑問はdoesn't it?ですね。
17. in that regard「その点で」。「似ている」はlook likeでも表現できます。（例）You do look like him.「君は彼とよく似てるね」。
18. peace talks「和平会談」。take placeの例文をもう一つ。Where did the train accident take place?「その電車事故をどこで起きたんだ？」。
19. take part inの代わりにparticipate inも使えます。「参加者」はparticipantsと言います。（例）Several important participants were delayed.「何人かの重要な参加者が遅れた」。charity event「チャリティーの催し（イベント）」。
20. be taken care of（受け身）になっている点に注目。（例）The check's taken care of.「お勘定は済ませてあります」。

→一応一通りやれる事は全部やった。

→彼はいつも人の弱みにつけ込む。

→ジムは新しい友だちと直ぐに仲良くなった（気が合った）。

→会議の間、議事録は取られなかった。
This picture is really badly taken. It's out of focus.
→下手くそだな。この写真ピンぼけだよ。
