木曜日は「英文法」の日。Practice before theory.「理屈より実践」。さまざな例文を参考にして、使える英文法を身につけましょう。今回は基本動詞Giveを取り上げます。

◆Giveを使いこなす！ (1)◆
日常会話の中でよく用いられる例文を五つ挙げてみます。

【リピーティング】
英文1～5をリピートしましょう

1. Give it to me. I'll fix it.
→僕に渡して。直してあげるから。
2. Give me a call any time.
→いつでも電話して。
3. Let's give this place a try.
→ここで食べてみよう。
4. Please give my best to everyone.
→どうぞみなさんによろしく。
5. I have to give a speech later.
→後でスピーチをしなくちゃならない。



▽解説・穴埋め

【解説】
1. give it to ～の語順に注意。（例）Who gave it to you?「誰がそれを君に渡したんだ？」。
2. give me a ～のパターンは応用できます。（例）Give me a hand if you're free.「暇なら手伝って」、Could you give me a hint?「ヒントをもらえませんか？」。
3. give this place a try「この場所を試す」で「ここで食べる」の意味に。（例）You should give this shampoo a try.「このシャンプーを試してみたらいい」。
4.「よろしく伝える」はgive one's best regards to ～やgive one's best wishes to ～でも表現できます。
5. give a speech「スピーチをする」。give a presentation「プレゼンをする」、give a lecture「講義をする」も一緒に覚えておきましょう。

6.「はっきり」をstraight「真っすぐ」で表現。（例）Don't beat around the bush.「遠回しな言い方はよしてくれ」。
7.「おまけ」はdiscount「割引」で表現できます。（例）Can I get a discount if I buy three?「三つ買ったら、おまけしてもらえますか？」。
8. read「読むこと（名詞）」の代わりにlookを使うと「ざっと見る」という意味になります。（例）Just give me a quick overview of your business.「手短に用件を言ってくれ」。
9. give one's congratulations to ～「～におめでとうと言う」。（例）Please give our condolences to his family.「彼の家族にお悔やみ申し上げますとお伝えください」。
10. give a detailed description「詳細に説明する」。（例）Give a respectful bow before you begin.「始める前に、きちちんとお辞儀をしなさい」。
