1. A: What's that bandage on your hand for?
B: I cut my finger in the kitchen.
A: どうして手に包帯してるの?
B: 台所で指を切っちゃったんだ。
2. A: What's "janken"?
B: It's the Japanese version of "scissors-paper-rock."
A: 「じゃんけん」て何?
B: 日本版の「グーチョキパー」だよ。
3. A: It looks like the economy is on the upswing again.
B: How can you tell?
A: また景気が上向いているみたいだね。
B: どうしてわかるの?
▽解説・練習
【解説】
1. What ~ for?「~は何のため?」。(例)What are you in such a hurry for?「何でそんなに急いでるの?」。bandage「包帯」。
《発音アドバイス》
What's, bandage, handにストレスを置いて、forでイントネーションを下げます。cut, finger, kitchenにストレス。リズムを意識して言ってみましょう。
2.「日本版の~」を the Japanese-version of ~で表現。(例)Let's play scissors-paper-rock.「じゃんけんしようよ」、Rock breaks scissors. Scissors cut paper. Paper smothers rock.「グーがチョキに、チョキがパーに、パーがグーに勝つ」。
《発音アドバイス》
What'sでイントネーションを上げ、jankenで下げます。versionが「バージョン」にならないように注意。scissors-paper-rockははっきりとした口調で。
3. look like ~「~のようである」、economy「景気、経済」。「上向きで」はon the upswing、「下向きで」はon the downswingと言います。この場合のtellは「わかる」という意味。(例)I can tell I'm not cut out for this job.「この仕事に向いてないのは自分でわかる」。
《発音アドバイス》
リズムを意識して、looks, economy, upswingにストレス。upswingでイントネーションを上げて、againで下げます。can youは「キャンニュー」という感じで。
【役割練習】
ロールプレイをしましょう。
◆日本語(カッコ内)のヒントを見て、Aのパートを演じてください。スタート音の後、1~3の音声が連続して流れます。
1. A: What's(包帯)
B: I cut my finger in the kitchen.
2. A: What's(ヒントなし)
B: It's the Japanese version of "scissors-paper-rock."
3. A: It looks(景気)
B: How can you tell?
◆Bのパートを演じてください。1~3の音声が連続して流れます。日本語のヒントはありません。

→天候が安定しないようですね。
