水曜日は「英作文」の日。日々の生活の中でよく使う言い回しを英語で表現してみましょう。練習は三つのパート（穴埋め問題）に分かれています。それでは始めましょう。

【Part 1】
日本語の意味になるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。

1. How much time to (　　　) before lunch?
→お昼まであとどれくらい？

2. This is a harsh and (　　　) job.
→これってきつくて報われない仕事だよね

→彼によろしくお伝えください。

1. to goの使い方に注目。（例）We still have an hour to go before lunch.「お昼までまだ1時間もあるよ」。
2. thankless「感謝されない、報われない」。形容詞～lessの他の例を挙げておきましょう。（例）hopeless「望みのない」、tasteless 「味のない」、useless「役に立たない」。
3. give one's best regards to ～が「～によろしく伝える」に当たる言い回し。（例）Please remember to say hello to her.「彼女によろしくね」。

【Part 2】
aとbが同じ意味になるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。

4. a: If someone wants to speak, let them!
b: Let (　　　) wants to speak speak!
→言いたい人には言わせておけ！

5. a. Let's stay together no matter what happens.

→何があってもずっと一緒にいよう。

4. Let whoever wants to speak speak!の文字通りの意味は「話したい人には誰でもいいから話させておけ」。（例）Whoever strikes first wins.「先手必勝（先に手を出した方が勝つ）」。a.のlet themの後にはspeakが省略されています。
5. through thick and thinは「どんな時でも（いい時も悪い時も）」という意味。（例）You should keep your word through thick and thin.「どんなことがあっても約束を守るべきだ」。「一緒にいる」をstay together / stand by each otherで表現している点にも注目。

日本語の意味になるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。最初の文字が与えられています。

【解説】
trust「信用する」、politician「政治家」。「平気で」をthink nothing of ～ing「～することを何とも思わない」で表現しています。「公約」はcampaign promiseと言います。（例）Young people these days seem to think nothing of being late for appointments.「最近の若者は約束に遅れることを何とも思っていないようだ」。
