「この車の鍵で金属探知器が鳴ったんだ」─ This car key set off the metal detector.
この場合のset offの意味は「作動させる」。「煙探知機が鳴る（作動させる）」はset off the smoke detectorと言います。「花火を打ち上げる」もset offで表現します。例文を一つ。The dome stadium is so big they can set off fireworks inside.「そのドーム型スタジアムはとても大きいので、中で花火を打ち上げられる」。
