木曜日は「英文法」の日。Practice before theory.「理屈より実践」。さまざな例文を参考にして、使える英文法を身につけましょう。今回もWhereです。
◆Whereを使いこなす！(2)◆
日常会話の中でよく用いられる例文をさらに五つ挙げてみます。
【リピーティング】
英文11～15をリピートしましょう。
11. Where were you last night?
→昨日の夜はどこにいたの？
12. Where did you get my phone number?
→どこで私の電話番号を知ったのですか？
13. Where will the ceremony take place?
→そのイベントはどこでやるの？
14. Where have you been all morning?
→午前中ずっとどこに行ってたの？
15. I don't know where to start.
→どこから始めたらいいかわからない。

【解説】
11. Where were you ～「～はどこにいたの？」。（例）Where were you when we really needed you?「必要な時に、どこにいたんだ？」。
12. Where did you get ～「～をどこで手に入れた（知った）のか？」。phone numberの代わりにe-mail addressを使えば、「どこで私のメールアドレスを知ったのですか？」の意味に。
13. Where will ～ take place?「～はどこで行われるのか？」。take placeは「行われる、開催される」の意味。（例）The car accident took place right in front of me.「その自動車事故は私の目の前で起きた」。
14.「どこに行っていたのか？」と聞く場合には、現在完了を用いて、Where have you been?と言います。all morning「午前中ずっと」。
15. where to startはwhere I should startの意味。（例）I can't decide where to go this summer.「今年の夏、どこに行こうか迷っている（決められない）」。

16. 受け身の文になっています。youを主語にした場合は、Where did you take this photo?と言います。
17. get that dark tan「黒く日焼けする」。（例）I got a tan from going to the beach two days in a row.「二日連続で海に行ったから焼けたちゃったよ」。
18. holdには「開催する」という意味があります。（例）I wonder where they're going to hold the summit this year.「今年はどこでサミットを開催するのだろうか」。
19. where he's goneの語順に注目。（例）Could you tell me where Gate 10 is?「10番搭乗口はどこですか？」。
20. vote on ～「～について投票で決める」。where to drinkはwhere we should drinkと言い換えられます。

→どのサイズをどこに置けばいいですか？

→時間と場所をもう一度言って。
Where to?
→どちらまで？
Where to?はタクシーの運転手が行き先を聞く時に使う表現です。「○○○はわかりますか？」と確認する場合は、Do you know ○○○?と言います。
