《今日のイディオム》stand out
「彼は人込みの中にいても目立つ」─ He stands out in a crowd.
stand outが「目立つ」に当たる言い回し。This stain stands out.と言えば、「この染みは目立つね」の意味になります。次の英文の意味を考えてみてください。Do any of the events of this year stand out in your mind?これで「今年、印象に残った出来事はありますか？」と聞いていることになります。ちなみに、「目立ちがり屋」もstand outで表現できます。He is the kind of person who likes to stand out in a crowd.「彼は目立ちたがり屋だ」。
