英文の文字通りの意味は「トンネルの終わり（出口）に明かりが見えない」。これで「お先真っ暗」を表現しています。Things「状況、事態」を主語にして、Things don't look good to me.とも言えます。さらに悪化しそうな場合は、Things are going from bad to worse.「状況はどんどん悪くなっている」。
