ステップアップ英作文で英語に磨きをかけましょう。

次の文を英訳すると？

1. あれ、なんか荷物届いてたのかな。
2. 不在届けが入ってる。
3. 管理人に預けておいてくれればいいのに。
4. 帰ってくるの遅いんだから、週末まで受け取れないよ。
5. 生ものじゃなければいいけど。

【Step 1】
日本語の意味に合わせて英訳してみましょう。

1. Oh, a package has been delivered?
2. There is a note because I was not at home.
3. He should have left it with the superintendent.
4. I come home late, so I can't pick it up until the weekend.
5. I hope it is not something fresh.

より英語らしく表現する（英語に磨きをかける）とどうなるか。カッコに入る語を考えてみてください。

【解説】
1. 「あれ？」をHuh?、「～かな」をLooks like ～で表現しています。会話ではIt looks like ～のItを省略することがよくあります。I got ～の代わりにsomebody sent me a packageと言ってもいいでしょう。
2. deliveryman「配達人」を使えば、簡単に表現できます。この場面では、Whoever delivered it left me a note.やThere's a delivery notice in the mail box.のような言い方もできます。
3. 主語にLeavingを使うところがポイント。would have been betterは「だったらよかったのに（実際は違う）」の意味になります。ここはI wishを使って次のようにも言えます。I really wish he had left it with the superintendent.
4. I can't pick it up / I have to wait until the weekendでもいいのですが、代わりにIt (The package)を使っているところがポイントです。このような言い回しはなかなか思いつきませんよね。weekendの後にto be picked upを補うと意味がはっきりするでしょう。
5. had betterのhadも、会話では省略される場合があります。spoilは「悪くなる、腐る」の意味。これで「悪くなるものじゃないといいけど」と言っているのです。ここでは、I hope it's not fresh fruit, fish or meat.やI hope it's nothing perishable.も使えます。perishableは「腐りやすい」の意味。
