英文法の急所（文法113回）
知っておくべき英文法のポイント（急所）を確認しましょう。今回のポイントは、苦手な構文を克服する(22)「英語の倍数表現を身につける」です。1.～4.のモノローグを赤字に注意して読んでください。
1. Babies grow really fast.
Look at our little girl.
She's already three times as big as she was at birth.
赤ちゃんは成長するのが本当に早いよね。
うちの娘を見てよ。
もう生まれた時の3倍も大きくなっている。
2. My supervisor is useless.
They pay him too much.
He makes three times more than he should.
僕の上司は使えないのに。
給料払いすぎだよ。
もらっていいはずの額の3倍はもらってるんだから。
3. This dog is huge.
It's almost the size of a small horse.
A child could ride it like a pony.
この犬でかいね。
小さな馬くらいの大きさだね。
子供が子馬みたいに乗れるかもね。
4. This mutual fund has a stable return.
And it's increasing.
Its value has doubled over the past two years.
この投資信託は収益が安定している。
それに、かなり増えている。
その価値は、この2年間で倍になった。

【解説】
1. three times as big as ～で「～の3倍の大きさ」の意味になります。at birth「生まれた時に」。
2.「～の3倍」はmore thanを使ってthree times more than ～でも表現できます。
3. almost the size of ～で「とほぼ同じ大きさ」の意味になります。almostの代わりにtwiceやthree timesを使えば「2倍、3倍」が表現できます。
4.「2, 3, 4倍になる」はそれぞれdouble, triple, quadrupleと言います。growとfold「～倍の」を組み合わせても表現できます。（例）grow fivefold「5倍になる」、grow sixfold「6倍になる」。mutual fund「（資本可変の）投資信託」、stable「安定した」。

8. only the size of ～「～の大きさ（広さ）しかない」の意味。「猫の額」をpostage stamp「郵便切手（小ささ、狭さを表現する時にも使用）」。
