英文法の急所（文法112回）
知っておくべき英文法のポイント（急所）を確認しましょう。今回のポイントは、苦手な構文を克服する(21)「theと比較級の組み合わせ表現」です。1.～4.のモノローグを赤字に注意して読んでください。
1. I'd like chili peppers on my pizza.
The more, the better.
I like it hot.
ピザに唐辛子をかけてください。
多ければ多いほどいいです。
辛いのが好きなんで。
2. We should return our rental car.
We don't need it anymore.
And the longer we keep it, the more it costs.
レンタカーを返した方がいいな。
もう必要ないし。
長く借りればそれだけ、お金がかかるからね。

【解説】
1. The moreの後にchili peppersを補って考えましょう。like hotで「辛いのが好き」の意味に。（例）I like it black.「（コーヒーは）ブラックで」。
2. long「長く」は副詞。the more (money)とは「お金」のこと。rental car「レンタカー」にはrent-a-carという言い方もあります。
3. the sooner（副詞）とthe easier（形容詞）で「早ければ早いほど、それだけ簡単になる」という意味になります。if ～「～かどうか」、reunion「同窓会」。
4. the looserとthe more comfortableの組み合わせで「（服が）ゆったりしてればいるほど、より快適になる」の意味。the fitとthe clothesの後には、それぞれ、isとareが省略されています。fit「（服の）合い具合」、tight-fitting「身体にぴったりした」、creed「モットー、信条」。

8. more new peopleで「より多くの新しい人」の意味。life「人生、生活」の前に冠詞は必要ありません。
