英文法の急所（文法111回）
知っておくべき英文法のポイント（急所）を確認しましょう。今回のポイントは、苦手な構文を克服する(20)「最上級表現の基本用法」です。1.～4.のモノローグを赤字に注意して読んでください。
1. Mike is the smartest person I know.
Academically, that is.
Sometimes he seems to lack common sense.
マイクは僕の知っている中で一番頭が切れる。
学問的にはね。
時々、常識に欠けるように思えることもあるけど。
2. That's the most ridiculous movie I've ever seen.
The plot didn't make sense at all.
And the acting was artificial.
あれは今まで見た中で一番ばかげた映画だよ。
まるで筋がわからない。
それに、演技がわざとらしかった。
3. What's the worst thing you've ever done?
Maybe you can't remember it.
We tend to forget things we're ashamed of.
これまでにしたことの中で一番ひどかったことって何？
多分、思い出せないよね。
恥ずかしいことって忘れやすいからね。
4. This computer is bigger than any other here.
But that doesn't make it better.
With computers, smaller is better.
このコンピューターはここにある他のどれよりも大きい。
だからといっていいわけではない。
コンピューターに関しては、小さい方がいいからね。

【解説】
1. 最上級の基本は「the＋形容詞（副詞）＋set」。the smartest personで「最も頭がいい」の意味に。
2. ridiculousのように音節が多い語の場合は、-estの代わりにmostを使います。plot「筋」、make sense「意味をなす」、artificial「わざとらしい、不自然な」。
3. badの比較級はworse、最上級はworstです。不規則変化する最上級にはgood / well → best, many / much → most, little → leastがあります。tend to ～「～しがち」、be ashamed of ～「～を恥じる」。
4. bigger than any other (computer) hereで「一番大きい」（最上級）の意味になります。any otherの後に名詞を続ける場合には単数形にします。
