英文法の急所（文法109回）
知っておくべき英文法のポイント（急所）を確認しましょう。今回のポイントは、苦手な構文を克服する(18)「If ～ notの働きをするunless」です。1.～4.のモノローグを赤字に注意して読んでください。
1. Hey, be careful.
You're way over the speed limit.
You're going to get a speeding ticket unless you slow down.
おい、気をつけろよ。
制限速度をはるかに超えてるぞ。
スピード落とさないと、スピード違反で捕まるぞ。
2. My term paper is due next week.
But I haven't done much research yet.

【解説】
1. unless you slow downでif you don't slow downの意味。way「はるかに」（強調の副詞）。
2. Unless I get to workはifを使ってIf I don't get to workと書き換えられます。get to wok「とりかかる」（workは名詞）。
3. unless you stop ～ingで「～するのをやないと」の意味に。put ～ down「～を（下に）置く」。spoil one's appetite「食欲がなくなる」。
4. Not unless ～で「事務所を燃やしたくなかったら、そんなにたくさん延長コードを使わない方がいい (You shouldn't use so many extension cords unless you want to burn the office down.)」と注意しているのです。burn ～ down「～を全焼させる」。

5. trip「つまずく」、watch one's step「足下に気をつける」。stepは単数形のままでOK。
6. 相手の予定を聞く場合には、plansと複数形にしましょう。
7. unless ～はif I didn't cup my earsと言い換えられます。この場合のcupは「（手を）カップのようにして覆う」という意味。
8. notとは"TV isn't bad for kids"の意味で、unlessを否定している訳ではありません。
