英文法の急所（文法108回）
知っておくべき英文法のポイント（急所）を確認しましょう。今回のポイントは、苦手な構文を克服する(17)「知っておきたいwould rather ～の使い方」です。1.～4.のモノローグを赤字に注意して読んでください。
1. You want me to go on a bike ride with you?
I'd rather stay home and relax than ride a bike.
But thanks for inviting me.
自転車で出かけるの？
自転車に乗るより、家にいてゆっくりしてる方がいいよ。
でも、誘ってくれてありがとう。
2. I'd rather not go to the cocktail party.
Sylvia is going to be there.
She and I aren't speaking to each other.
カクテルパーティーには行きたくない。
シルビアが来るんでしょう。
彼女と私、口をきいてないから。
3. Would you rather drive than take the train?
Driving is more comfortable.
But the train will get us downtown quicker.
電車に乗らずに、車で行かない？
車の方がずっと楽だよ。
電車の方がダウンタウンには早く着くけどね。
4. I was a business major in grad school.
I'd rather have studied art.
But there's no money in that.
大学院でビジネスを専攻したんだ。
芸術を勉強していたらよかったよ。
でも、芸術じゃお金は稼げないけどね。

【解説】
1. would rather A than Bで「むしろBよりAの方がしたい」の意味を表します。go on a bike ride「自転車に乗って出かける」。
2. would ratherを否定形で用いる場合には、notの位置に注意する必要があります。notはratherの後。
3. 疑問文の語順はWould you rather ～とWouldを文頭に出します。get「連れて行く」。
4. would ratherの後に完了形have studied artを続けて「（実際にはそうではなかったが）芸術を専攻していたらよかった」という願望を表しています。a business major「ビジネスを専攻する学生」。

8. no one elseの後に関係代名詞that / who(m)を補って考えましょう。no one elseがmarriedの目的語になっています。これで「今の妻と結婚してよかった」と言っているのです。
