英文法の急所（文法105回）
知っておくべき英文法のポイント（急所）を確認しましょう。今回のポイントは、苦手な構文を克服する(14)「英語のつけ足し表現」です。1.～4.のモノローグを赤字に注意して読んでください。
1. My car got stuck in the snow last week.
I had to walk home in the freezing rain.
I was not only tired, but also cold and wet.
先週、車が雪の中で動かなくなって。
みぞれの中を家まで歩いて帰らなくてはならなかった。
疲れて、それに寒くて、ずぶ濡れだったよ。
2. Linda is an interesting person.
You know she flies helicopters as a hobby, right?
Did you know that she's a writer as well as a pilot?

趣味でヘリを飛ばすのは知ってるよね。

3. Chemistry 220 is a tough class.

【解説】
1. not only tired, but also cold and wetで「疲れているばかりではなく、寒くて、また、ずぶ濡れにもなっていた」の意味になります。get stuck「身動きがとれなくなる」、freezing rain「みぞれ」。
2. not only A but also BとB as well as Aの語順の違いに注意しましょう。
3. in addition to ～で「～に加えて、なお～の上に」の意味を表します。lab「実験室」(laboratoryの短縮形)。
4. on top of that「なおその上に」を使って、どれだけひどい損害を受けたかを訴えています。

8. このthatは前の内容を指しています。in addition to ～を使ってもいいでしょう。
