英文法の急所（文法104回）
知っておくべき英文法のポイント（急所）を確認しましょう。今回のポイントは、苦手な構文を克服する(13)「接続詞whileの表す意味」です。1.～4.のモノローグを赤字に注意して読んでください。
1. While I was driving, I almost fell asleep.
I decided to pull over for a nap.
I thought it would be the safest thing to do.
運転中に、寝そうになったので。
少し眠るために車を止めた。

2. I ran into an old friend today while walking to the station.
We hadn't met in years.

【解説】
1. このwhileは「～している間に、最中に」の意味を表します。pull over「片側に寄せて止める」。
2. whileは1.と同様に「～している間に」の意味。whileとwalkingの間にI wasが省略されています。
3. この場合のwhileはas long as ～「～するか限りは（ずっと）」と同じ働きをしています。leave the nest「（親元から）巣立つ」。
4. 文脈からもわかるように、この場合のwhileは「～だけれども」の意味になります。tempt「その気にさせる」、turn down「（申し出などを）断る」、go under「破産（倒産）する」。
