英文法の急所（文法103回）
知っておくべき英文法のポイント（急所）を確認しましょう。今回のポイントは、苦手な構文を克服する(12)「suchの四つの用い方」です。1.～4.のモノローグを赤字に注意して読んでください。
1. My girlfriend dumped me because I gamble too much.
I was sad, but then I won the lottery.
Such is life.
ギャンブルのやりすぎで彼女にふられ。
悲しい思いをしたと思ったら、宝くじに当たるんだから。
人生ってそんなもんだよ。
2. I'd stay away from such a person.
He hangs around with the wrong people.
It won't do his reputation any good.
僕ならそんな人には近づかないな。
彼、よくない人たちと付き合ってるんだろう。
評判が悪くなるよ。
3. Dave is a wealthy young single man.
You can tell by the things he talks about.
Things such as yachts and sports cars.

4. I used to run quite a bit.
I was such an athlete that I even ran some marathons.
Those days are gone, of course.

【解説】
1. suchは前の内容を受けた代名詞で、「そのようなもの」という意味。dump「捨てる」、win the lottery「宝くじに当たる」。
2. このsuchは形容詞。冠詞a(n)がある場合には、*a such ～ではなくsuch a ～の語順になる点に注意。hang around with ～「～と付き合う」、not do ～ any good「～のためにならない」。
3. Things such asの後に具体例を続けて、「～などのようなこと」の意味になります。この場合のtellは「わかる」の意味。
4. 名詞athlete「運動選手」をsuchで強調し、「とても～なので...である (that以降の文)」の意味に。形容詞や副詞を強める場合にはsoを使います。
