ロールプレイしましょう。

◇どうしたの？◇
A: What happened to you?
B: What do you mean, "What happened?"
A: Your tie is crooked, your coat is wrinkled and your shirttails are hanging out.
B: Nothing happened. I always dress this way.

【和訳】
A: どうしたの？
B: どしたのって、どういう意味？
A: ネクタイは曲がってるし、上着はしわくちゃだし、シャツのすそが出てるわよ。
B: 何にもないよ。いつもこうだよ。

【解説】
What happened to ～？「～に何があったのか？」。crooked「曲がっている」、wrinkled「しわくちゃの」、hang out「垂れ下がる」。自動詞dressは「服装をしている」の意味。

《例文》
1. What happened to your leg? You're walking with a limp.
→脚をどうしたの？引きずって歩いてる。
2. That picture on the wall is crooked.
→壁のあの絵、曲がってる。
3. Your dress shirt is all wrinkled up.
→君のワイシャツしわだらけね。
4. Driving with your elbow hanging out the window is dangerous.
→肘を出して運転するのは危ない。
5. I was the youngest of three kids, so I always dressed in hand-me-downs.
→三人兄弟の一番下だったので、いつもお下がりを着ていた。

【音読アドバイス】
A: youを特に強調しましょう。
B: 質問の意味がわからないという感じで聞き返します。
A: tie, crooked, coat, wrinkled, shirttails, hangingにストレスを置き、何が問題なのかを一つ一つ指摘します。
B: Nothingの[θ]に注意。alwaysを強調。
