英文法の急所（文法98回）
知っておくべき英文法のポイント（急所）を確認しましょう。今回のポイントは、苦手な構文を克服する(7)「文をつなぐ関係代名詞whichの用法」です。1.～4.のモノローグを赤字に注意して読んでください。
1. I have a real sweet tooth.
Doughnuts are my favorite snack.
I especially like the ones which have custard inside.
僕は甘党なんだ。
ドーナツが好きでね。
中にカスタードクリームが入ってるのが特に好き。
2. Those trucks there are all over ten tons.
They require a special license to drive.
These here are one-tone trucks, which don't.
そこにあるのはすべて10トントラック。
運転するには特殊な免許が必要です。
ここにあるのは1トンのトラックで、普通免許で運転できます。
3. Remember last year's earthquake?
This is the spot on which I was standing then.
I had to hold on to the tree to keep from falling down.
去年の地震を覚えてる？
ここがその時、僕が立っていた場所なんだ。
木にしがみついていないと倒れそうだったよ。
4. Our children are only 12 and 15.
We don't allow them to stay out late.
And they can't go to parties at which there's no adult supervision.

【解説】
1. whichは前後の文をつなぐ接続詞とthe onesを受ける代名詞としてhaveの主語の役割を果たしています。whichの代わりにthatも使えます。
2. whichは前後の文を結びつける接続詞、また、one-ton trucksを受ける代名詞としてdon't requireの主語の働きをしています。whichの前にコンマがついているので、この場合は後から説明を付け加えています。don'tの後にはrequire a special license to driveが略されています。
3. This is the spotとI was standing on the spot then.をwhichを使って一つの文にしています。This is the spot which I was standing on then.（この文の方が口語的）のonを代名詞の役割を果たしているwhichの前に移動したのです。
4. 後半の文は、there's no adult supervision at partiesですが、partiesをwhich にして、at と共に文を結びつける場所に移動しています。これでwhichが接続詞と代名詞（partiesを指す）の働きをします。allow ～ to ...「～に...することを許す」、supervision「監督、監視」。
