英文法の急所（文法97回）
知っておくべき英文法のポイント（急所）を確認しましょう。今回のポイントは、苦手な構文を克服する(6)「thatの文と文をつなぐ働き：接続詞と関係代名詞」です。1.～4.のモノローグを赤字に注意して読んでください。
1. I heard that you were leaving town today.
Why didn't you tell us earlier?
We could have thrown you a party.
今日、町を出るんだって。
どうしてもっと早く言ってくれなかったの？
お別れ会を開けたのに。
2. I didn't plan on doing any grocery shopping.
But the store is right here by the bank.
Now that I'm here, I guess I'll buy a few things.

【解説】
1. 接続詞thatがI hearとyou were ～の二つの文を結びつけています。このthatは省略可。throw ～ a party「～のためにパーティーを開く」。
2. Now that ～で「（今）～なのだから、～ということなのだから」の意味を表します。do some grocery shopping「ちょっと食料品を買う」。（例）I make it a rule to do some swimming every Saturday.「毎週土曜日、少し泳ぐことにしてるんだ」。
3. このthatは前後の文を結びつけ、is needed to be a modelの主語になっています。つまり、thatは接続詞であると同時にeverythingを指す代名詞の働きをしているのです。carry oneself「振る舞う」。
4. thatが前後の文を結びつけ（接続詞）、I've been wantingの目的語（the CD）の役目も果たしています。このthatは省略できます。used「中古の」。
