【場面２】Giving Directions 道案内をする
A: Excuse me. Could you tell me how to get to the soccer stadium?
B: Keep going straight on this road until you see a small park on your left.
A: Then I turn?
B: Yes. Take a left after the park. You'll see it a few hundred meters down the road. You can't miss it.
A: OK. Thanks a lot.
A: すみません。サッカースタジアムへはどう行ったらいいですか？
B: 左に小さな公園が見えるまでこの道をまっすぐ行ってください。
A: そこで曲がるんですか？
B: ええ。公園を通り過ぎて左に曲がってください。数百メートル先にスタジアムが見えます。すぐにわかりますよ。
A: わかりました。ありがとうございます。
1. I'm going there, too. Why don't you come along?
→僕もそこまで行きます。一緒に行きませんか？
2. There'll be a lot of people walking there, so just follow the crowd and you'll be fine.
→たくさんの人が歩いていきますので、ついていけば大丈夫ですよ。
3. Turn (to the) right at the first traffic light.
→最初の信号を右に曲がってください。
・to theは省略できます。
4. Follow the road as it curves to the left.
→道なりに左の方へ曲がっていってください。
5. When the road forks, keep on the right.
→道が二股に分かれますので、右に行ってください。
6. Take a left at the next corner, then walk toward the clock tower.
→次の角を左に曲がり、時計台の方へ向かっていってください。
・Takeの代わりにMakeも使えます。
7. Can you see the tall building standing way over there on the right?
→ずっと向こうの右側に高いビルが建っているのが見えますか？
8. Take your second right, and it'll be right around the corner.
→二つ目の角を右に曲がって、すぐの所にあります。
9. If you can't find your way, then ask somebody again.
→わからなくなったら、また、誰かに聞いてください。
10. Sorry I don't know this area well.
→すみません、この辺りに詳しくないんです。
・I'm not familiar with this area.とも言えます。
★Extra Bit
歩いていて、突然、Where is the nearest train station?「最寄りの駅はどこですか？」と聞かれたとしましょう。知っていれば答えられますが……。わからない時の返事の仕方です。
The nearest train station? Sorry, you'll have to ask somebody else. I just don't know. I'm not familiar with this area. ( I'm not from around here.でもOK。）
【和訳】
最寄りの駅ですか？すみません、他の誰かに聞いて下さい。わからないんです。この辺りに詳しくないものですから（この辺りの出身ではないので）。
OK, let me ask him / her.（じゃあ、彼 / 彼女に聞いてみましょう）と言って通りかかった人に確認してもいいですね。道案内に関するさまざまな言い回しについては、いずれこのコーナーで取り上げます。
