前回so ～ that … を取り上げました。今回のポイントはsuch ～ that … です。
まずは例文から。
1. He's such a nice guy that everybody likes him.
彼はとてもいい奴なのでみんなから好かれている。
2. It was such a hard bump that I saw stars.
ひどくぶつけたから目から火が出た。
3. It was such a sad story that I couldn't hold back my tears.
とても悲しい話だったので涙を抑えきれなかった。
such a nice guy that … 、such a hard bump that … 、such a sad story that … が基本パターンです。これで「とても～なので … である」の意味を表します。
もう少し例文を挙げておきましょう。
4. He's such a liar that nobody trusts him anymore.
彼は嘘ばかりつくのでもう誰も信用しない。
5. The car was such a mess that we had to sell it for scrap.
車はひどい状態だったのでスクラップとして売るしかなかった。
6. She was in such a hurry she forgot to lock the door.
彼女はとても急いでいてドアの鍵を閉め忘れた。
7. This beef stew is made with such high-quality ingredients that it's really tasty.
このビーフシチューはとても上質な食材で作られているので本当に美味しい。
4.と5.はsuch a liar / such a hurryで形容詞がないパターン。6.ではhurryの後に来るthatが略されています。7.はingredientsが複数形ですから、such aにはなりません。
