《今日のFUP：1220》 茫然自失 ─ ぼうぜんじしつ
「その知らせを聞き、彼は茫然自失。何も言えなかった」─ Hearing the news stunned him. It left him speechless.
stun「茫然、唖然とさせる」で「茫然自失」を表現。speechless「口が聞けない」。Whenで始めて、英文を言い換えると・・・When he heard the news, it bowled him over. He couldn't say a word.となります。bowl ～ over「～をひどく驚かす、びっくり仰天させる」。
（例）「今月の電話代を見て、目玉が飛び出しそうになった」─ My eyes nearly popped out when I looked at my phone bill this month.
・pop out「(ぽんと) 飛び出す」。
前回の復習
「新しいメニューを出し始めてから、この店は千客万来の繁盛ぶりだ」─ Ever since they started serving the new menu, this place has been packed with customers.
「(飲食物を) 出す」─ serve
「お客で一杯になる (千客万来の繁盛ぶり)」─ be packed / crowded with customers
「混み合っている」─ crowded
「満席なんです」─ I'm afraid all our seats are taken.
「これが噂の行列のできる店か」─ This is the place everybody is talking about, where customers line up to get in.
Extra Bit：「コンサートホールは人で溢れ、立錐の余地なしという大盛況だった」─ The concert hall was so jam-packed there wasn't room to breathe.
