《今日のFUP：1126》 波瀾万丈 ─ はらんばんじょう
「その老人は戦中、戦後を通じて波瀾万丈の人生を送ってきた」 ─ Through the war and its aftermath, the old man has lived a life full of ups and downs, twists and turns.
aftermath「直後の時期 (戦後)」。live a life full of ～「～に満ちた人生を送る」。ups and downs「浮き沈み」とtwists and turns「紆余曲折」で「波瀾万丈」を表現。A and B。このパターンの表現をいくつか挙げておきましょう。peaks and valleys「絶頂とどん底 (山と谷)」、misery and suffering「苦難と苦痛」、trials and tribulations「試練と苦難」。
（例）「彼は辛い経験をしてきた」─ He’s been through some harsh experiences.
・be / go through ～「～を経験する」。
前回の復習
「彼は虚心坦懐に何でもずばずば言う人なので、時として誤解される場合がある」─ He’s a straight talker with an open heart, so he’s sometimes misunderstood. / He’s so open-hearted and frank that people sometimes get him wrong.
「歯に衣を着せずに言う人」─ straight talker
「率直に (虚心坦懐に)」─ with an open heart
「誤解される」─ be misunderstood
「隠し立てしない」─ open-hearted
「率直な」─ frank
「～を誤解する」─ get ～ wrong
「彼女は澄ました顔してきついことを言う」─ She says some pretty harsh things with a straight face.
Extra Bit：「面接では、 虚心坦懐に話すことが必要だ」─ You have to be up-front and candid at interviews.
