《今日のFUP：1064》 四苦八苦 ─ しくはっく
「彼はプレゼン用のハンドアウト作りに四苦八苦しているようだ」 ─ He looks like he’s having a lot of trouble creating some presentation handouts.
have a lot of trouble ～ing「～にするのに大変苦労する」で「四苦八苦する」を表現。have a really hard time ～ing「かなり辛い思いをする」、struggle to ～「～するのにもがき苦しむ」も使えます。「作り出す」ならcreate、「準備する」ならprepareですね。
(例)「部内の意見をまとめるのにとても苦労した」─ It was a real struggle trying to put together a consensus within the department.
・この場合のstruggle「苦闘」は名詞。put together「まとめる」。
前回の復習
「その芸人がジョークを言い、劇場内のみんなが抱腹絶倒した」─ The entertainer told a joke and everyone in the theater burst into sidesplitting laughter.
「腹の皮がよじれるほど笑う (抱腹絶倒)」─ burst into sidesplitting laughter / double over with laugher / split one’s sides laughing
「涙が出るほど笑った」─ I laughed until tears came out.
「笑いすぎちゃった」─ I’m all laughed out.
「笑わないようしたんだけど、思わず笑ってしまった」─ The more I tried not to laugh, the more the laughter forced its way out.
Extra Bit：「お腹が痛くなるまで笑った」─ I laughed until my stomach hurt.
