《今日のFUP：1055》 奇想天外 ─ きそうてんがい
「この推理小説は奇想天外などんでん返しで終わる」 ─ This mystery ends with a plot twist that you’ll never expect.
plot twist「どんでん返し」。「奇想天外」をnever expect「決して予想できない」で表現している点に注目。形容詞unexpected「思いがけない」を使って、This mystery ends with an unexpected plot twist.、あるいは、This mystery ends with a plot twist that’s totally unexpected.でも「奇想天外な (全く予想外の) どんでん返しで終わる」という意味になります。 (例)「驚いたことに、予想外の問題は何も出てこなかった」─ Amazingly, no unexpected problems cropped up.
・crop up「(不意に) 生じる、現れる」。

「岡目八目。このプロジェクトに関わっていないから、どこに問題点があるかわかる」─ Sometimes you can see best from a distance. I’m not involved in this project, so I can tell where its problems lie.
「少し離れると一番よく見える (岡目八目)」─ see best from a distance
「試合を見ている人は選手よりもよく見える (岡目八目)」─ People watching the game see more than the players do.
「～に関わる」─ be involved in ～
「(問題点などが) ある」─ lie
「君は関わっているから、物事を客観的に見られないんだ」─ Your involvement means you can’t look at things objectively.
Extra Bit：「会議での君の主張はあまりに主観的過ぎた」─ You stressed your point too subjectively at the meeting.
