《今日のFUP：1053》 半信半疑 ─ はんしんはんぎ
「彼女の話を聞いた時、私は半信半疑だった」 ─ When I heard her story, half of me wanted to believe it, and half of me thought it was untrue.
ここではhalf of me「半分の自分」とbelieve「信じる」を使って、日本語に近い言い方をしています。untrue「真実ではない」。 When I heard her story, I wasn’t all that convinced.とも言えます。be not all that convinced「完全に信じた、納得した訳ではない」で 「半信半疑」を表現。
(例)「本当にこの薬で毛が生えてくるのかと父は半信半疑だった」─ My father is half in doubt that this medicine can really make hair grow back again.
・half in doubtが「半信半疑」に当たる表現。
前回の復習
「彼は自分の考えに固執していて、どんなに批判しても馬耳東風だ」─ He sticks to his opinions no matter what, so all criticism is lost on him / so he’s deaf to any kind of criticism.
「何があっても～にこだわる」─ stick to ～ no matter what
「～には通じない、効き目がない、馬耳東風 (批判などを聞き流す)」─ be lost on ～
「～に耳を貸さない」─ be deaf to ～
「僕は彼の言い訳に耳を貸さなかった」─ I turned a deaf ear to his excuses.
Extra Bit：「あいつの言う事なんて、聞き流してればいいんだよ」─ Whatever he says, you can just let it go in one ear and out the other.
