《今日のFUP：1042》 言語道断 ─ ごんごどうだん
「友達から借りたお金を返さないとは言語道断だ」 ─ Borrowing money from a friend and never returning it is outrageous.
borrowing「借りること」、never returning「返さないこと」(動名詞) の使い方に注目。「言語道断」とはoutrageous「とんでもない、ひど過ぎる」ということですね。Itで始めて、It’s inexcusable not to pay back the money you borrow from a friend.と言ってもいいでしょう。inexcusable「弁解できない、許し難い」。
(例)「そんな話は論外だよ」─ That’s not even worthy of consideration.
・not even worthy of consideration「考慮にも値しない」。
前回の復習
「彼の判断はいつも公明正大で、決してえこひいきしたりしない」─ He’s always fair and square in his judgements and never shows favoritism.
「公明正大な」─ fair and square
「判断、見解」─ judgment
「えこひいきする」─ show favoritism
「今回の件が公明正大に処理されることを望む」─ We hope they will deal with this case in an open and aboveboard manner.
