《今日のFUP：1009》 臨機応変 ─ りんきおうへん
「今は臨機応変に対処できる柔軟性が求められている」 ─ What’s needed now is the flexibility it takes to play it by ear.
What’s needed now「今必要とされていること」。the flexibility (that) it takes to play it by earの意味は「臨機応変に対処するために必要になる柔軟性」。play it by earが「臨機応変にやる、ぶっつけ本番でやる」に当たる言い回しです。act according to changing circumstances「変化する状況に応じて行動する」と言い換えられますが、play it by earの方がシンプルですね！
(例)「この漫才コンビの突っ込み役はあまりアドリブがきかない」─ The straight man of this comedy duo isn’t very good at ad-libbing.
・「(お笑いの) 突っ込み役」はstraight man、「ぼけ役」はfunny manと言います。ad-lib「即興でやる」。
前回の復習
「十人十色。みんな違った考え方をする」 ─ So many men, so many minds. Everybody has a different way of thinking.
「色々な人がいて、色々な心がある (十人十色 )」 ─ So many men, so many minds.
「人の好み (考え方) はさまざま」 ─ To each his / her own.
「彼女が彼のことを好きになっても不思議はない」 ─ There’s nothing strange about her liking him.
「人の好みは十人十色」 ─ Everyone has their own unique set of likes and dislikes.
Extra Bit：「色々な人がいるからね」 ─ People come in all shapes and sizes.
