「今日は散々だったよ。寝坊はするし、その上、電車は遅れるし」─ Today is shaping up horribly -- first I oversleep and then my train comes late.
shape up「（事態などが）発展する」とhorribly「ひどく」を組み合わせて「散々」を表現。This is turning out to be an awful day -- first I slept late and my train was late.と言ってもいいでしょう。turn out to be an awful dayの意味は「ひどい一日になる」。
（例）「昨日のテストは散々だったよ」─ I bombed on the exam yesterday.
