「彼の言い分を聞いたが、どうも釈然としないところがある」─ I heard what he had to say, but it wasn't very convincing.
not very convincing「あまり説得力がない」で「釈然としない」を言い換えて表現しています。unsatisfying「不満が残る」を使って、次のように言ってもいいでしょう。I heard what he had to say, and I have to say I found it unsatisfying.
（例）「もっと納得できるような言い訳をしてほしいよ」─ I want to hear a more convincing excuse from you.
