「栄光と挫折はまさに背中合わせだ」─ Triumph and defeat are two sides of the same coin.
two sides of the same coin「コインの両面」で「背中合わせ」を表現しています。Ignominious defeat is the flip side of glorious triumph.とも言えます。ignominiousは「不名誉な」、flip sideは「反対の面」という意味。
（例）「憎しみは愛情の裏返し」─ Hatred and love are two sides of the same coin.

「自立している（自活する）」─ support oneself
「独立した」─ independent
