《今日のイディオム》off the mark
「君の言ったことはまったく的外れだ」─ What you said is way off the mark.
off the markが「的外れ」に当たる言い回し。それを強調するために副詞wayを付け足して、way off the markで「まったく的外れ」を表現しています。off the markは天気予報にも使えます。The weather forecast was off the mark again.と言えば、「天気予報がまたはずれた」という意味に。wide of the markでも同じような意味になります。Sorry, but I get the feeling my answer was wide of the mark.「ごめん、全然的外れな答えをしたみたいだね」。
