第164回

木曜日は「英文法」の日。Practice before theory.「理屈より実践」。さまざな例文を参考にして、使える英文法を身につけましょう。今回も基本動詞Askを取り上げます。

◆Askを使いこなす！ (2)◆
日常会話の中でよく用いられる例文を五つ挙げてみます。

【リピーティング】
英文11～15をリピートしましょう。

11. Call her and ask her out.
→彼女に電話して誘えよ。
12. I asked him to call me back.
→彼に折り返し電話するように頼んだ。
13. We were asked to take over their project.
→彼らのプロジェクトを引く継ぐように頼まれた。
14. Ask away if you have questions.
→質問があったらどんどん聞いてください。
15. That was a boring play, if you ask me.
→あれは退屈な演劇だった、僕に言わせればね。




▽解説・穴埋め

【解説】
11. ask out「（食事やデートなどに）誘う」。（例）Did you ask your wife out first, or did she ask you?「最初に誘ったのは君、それとも、奥さん？」。
12. ask ～ to ...で「～に...するように頼む」という意味。（例）Oops! I forgot to ask you to get something.「あっ！買って来てもらうのを忘れた」。
13. be asked to ～「～するように頼まれる」。受け身形です。（例）She was asked to water the plants.「彼女は植木に水をやるように頼まれた」。
14. Ask away.が「どんどん聞く（質問する）」に当たる言い回し。（例）I'm sure you all have lots of questions. So ask away.「きっと皆さん聞きたいことがたくさんあるでしょうから。どんどん聞いてください」。
15. if you ask meは「僕に言わせれば」に当たる言い回し。（例）This cake doesn't really live up to its reputation, if you ask me.「このケーキは評判の割には、あまり美味しくない、僕に言わせればね」。

【穴埋め】
日本語の意味なるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。

16. ask out「誘う」とturn down「断る」の使い方に注目。
17. Don't ask me to ～「～するように頼むな」。（例）Please don't ask me to help. I've got a full plate already.「手伝えないよ。もう手一杯なんだから」。
18. have been to ～「～するように頼まれている」。（例）I've been asked to give a lecture at a local college.「地元の大学で講演するように頼まれている」。
19. ask awayは「どんどん聞く」ですが、ask around「いろいろな人に聞いて回る」も一緒に覚えておきましょう。（例）If you're looking for a nice Japanese-style pub, you should ask around.「いい居酒屋を捜しているんだったら、みんなに聞いたらいいよ」。
20. if you ask meはif you want my opinion「僕の意見を求めるなら」に言い換えられます。（例）If you want my opinion, that makes you sound like a rank amateur.「俺から言わせれば、それはド素人のセリフだよ」。

Askを使った例文をさらに追加しておきます。

Here are the light bulbs you asked for.
→君に頼まれた電球だよ。
I only asked because I wanted to know.
→知りたいから、聞いてみただけ。
I don't like being asked these questions.
→こういう質問をされたくない。
Is it weird for a girl to be asking out a boy?
→女の子が男の子を誘うのは変かな？
Have you ever asked yourself that question?
→自分自身にその質問をしたことがあるだろうか？
(This is) Just a quick note to ask how you're doing.
→どうしてるかと思って手紙（メール）を書きました。
