第150回

木曜日は「英文法」の日。Practice before theory.「理屈より実践」。さまざな例文を参考にして、使える英文法を身につけましょう。今回も基本動詞Makeを取り上げます。

◆Makeを使いこなす！ (2)◆
日常会話の中でよく用いられる例文を五つ挙げてみます。

【リピーティング】
英文11～15をリピートしましょう。

11. That makes sense.
→なるほどね。
12. I made it to the last train!
→終電に間に合った！
13. I can't make up my mind right now.
→今すぐには決められません。
14. I can't make out why she's upset.
→なぜ彼女が怒っているのかわからない。
15. I'll make it up to you later.
→後で埋め合わせをするからさ。



▽解説・穴埋め

【解説】
11. That makes sense.「それは意味をなす」で「なるほどね」を表現。（例） It doesn't make any sense at all.「ちんぷんかんぷんだ（まるで意味がわからない）」。
12. make it to ～「～に間に合う」。（例）I made it to class just as the bell rang.「ベルが鳴るのと同時にクラスに着いた」。
13. make up one's mind「決心する」。（例）She made up her mind to break up with him.「彼女は彼と別れることにした」。
14. この場合のmake outは「わかる、理解する」という意味。（例）I couldn't make out what she was trying to say to me.「彼女が僕に何を言おうとしていたのかわからなかった」。
15. make it up to ～が「～に埋め合わせをする」に当たる言い回し。（例）I promise I'll make it up to you some time.「約束するよ、いつか埋め合わせをする」。

【穴埋め】
日本語の意味なるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。

【解説】
16. make sense of ～で「わかる」という意味。（例）Hearing his explanation, I couldn't make any sense out of it.「彼の説明を聞いていたら、訳がわからなくなってきた」。
17.「～まで行く」をmake it to ～で表現。（例）They made it up to the playoffs.「彼らはプレーオフまで行った」。
18. make up one's mindを受け身にしています。次の言い回しも覚えておきましょう。I can't make up my mind right now. Let me sleep on it.「今すぐには決められません。一晩考えさせてください」。
19. can't make outとfine print「細かい文字」を組み合わせて「文字が小さくてわからない」を表現。（例） I can't make out what the sign says without my glasses.「メガネを掛けてないので、その看板に何が書いてあるのかわからない」。
20.「埋め合わせるために何をするつもり？」で「どうしてくれるの？」を表現しています。（例）Could you please say you were the one who broke this vase? I swear I'll make it up to you later.「君がこの壷を壊したことにしておいてくれない？後でこの借りはちゃんと返すから」。

→今度ランチをおごって埋め合わせをするから。
You can't make a problem go away by ignoring it.
→無視するだけでは問題は片づかない。

→行けるかどうかは微妙です
Sorry, I'm still sitting on the fence. I can't make up my mind.
→ごめん、まだどっちか決めていないんだ。決心がつかないんだよ。
