木曜日は「英文法」の日。Practice before theory.「理屈より実践」。さまざな例文を参考にして、使える英文法を身につけましょう。今回はWhichです。

◆Whichを使いこなす！(1)◆
日常会話の中でよく用いられる例文をさらに五つ挙げてみます。

【リピーティング】
英文1～5をリピートしましょう。

1. Which is mine?
→どっちが僕の？
2. Which one is the best?
→どれが一番いい？
3. Which side are you on?
→君はどっちの味方なんだ？
4. I wonder which of these two is better.
→これとこれ、どっちがいいかな。
5. Which are you, a cat person or a dog person?
→君はどっち、猫が好き、犬が好き？

【解説】
1. mineをyoursに代えれば「どっちが君の？」。（例）I don't know which is mine.「どっちが僕のかわからない」。
2. Which ～ is the best?で「どの～が一番？」の意味。（例）Which car is the best?「どの車が一番いい？」。
3. Which side are you on?この質問に「君の味方だよ」と答える場合は、I'm on your side.と言います。
4. which of these twoは「この二つの中でどれが」の意味。（例）Can you see which of these boys is me?「（若い頃の写真を見せて）ここにいる少年の中でどれが僕だかわかる？」。
5. a cat / dog person「猫好き・猫派 / 犬好き・犬派」。この英文は次のように言い換えられます。Which do you like better, cats or dogs?

【解説】
6. correctの代わりにrightも使えます。（例）I wonder which is right.「どっちが正しいのかな」。
7. southをnorth, east, westに置き換えれば、東西南北が確認できます。
8. 今、試合が行われている時に聞いているので、are you rooting forと進行形になっています。（例）What baseball team do you root for?「どこの野球チームを応援してるの？」。
9. I wonder which ～で「どれが～かな」の意味に。（例）I wonder which is more difficult.「どっちが難しいかな」。
10. Whichとorの組み合わせは頻繁に使われます。（例）Which fabric is thicker, this one or that one over there?「これとあそこにあるのと、どちらが厚い生地ですか？」。
