I spend my weekends working in the garden.
Keeping the weeds under control is hard work.
But the smell of the flowers and the sound of the birds are relaxing.

【和訳】
週末は庭仕事をするんだ。
雑草の手入れをするのは大変な仕事だけど。
花のにおいをかいだり、鳥のさえずりを聞くと心がなごむ。

【解説】
spend ～＋...ingで「～を...するのに費やす」の意味になります。keep ～ under control「～を抑える、コントロールする」。Keeping ～と動名詞を主語にしている点に注目。weeds「雑草」。relaxingは「リラックスさせる、心をなごませる」という意味の形容詞。

《例文》
1. I spend my holidays vegetating in my apartment.
→休みはアパートでぼんやりと過ごすんだよ。
2. We have to keep the situation under control.
→状況を掌握しなくてはならない。
3. No worries. Everything's under control.
→心配いらないよ。すべて順調だから。
4. Meeting him made me like him even better.
→会って、より一層彼が好きになりました。
5. I like to take long, relaxing baths.
→のんびりと長湯をするのが好きなの。

【音読アドバイス】
《ポイント：子音[dz]》 cards, friends, hands, words
ポイントはストレスの置き方と[dz] (weekends, weeds, birds)の発音。I, weekends, working, gardenにストレスを置きます。weekendsの[dz]は舌先をしっかり上につけて発音。続けて、Keeping, weeds, control, hard, workにストレス。hardとworkの母音が同じ発音にならないように注意しましょう。Butは軽く「バッ」。smell, flowers, sound, birds, relaxingにストレスを置き、リズムに乗って話しましょう。
