英文法の急所（文法91回）
知っておくべき英文法のポイント（急所）を確認しましょう。今回のポイントは、不定詞を使いこなす(5)「toを使った慣用表現」です。1.～4.のモノローグを赤字に注意して読んでください。
1. I saw that movie you recommended.
I wasn't very impressed.
To be frank, it was awful.
君が薦めてくれたあの映画を見たよ。
あまり感動しなかったな。
率直に言うと、ひどかった。
2. I worked with Jerry last month.

【解説】
1. To be frank (with you)で「率直に言うと」の意味。impressed「感動して、感銘を受けて」。
2. To tell the truth「実は、実を言うと」はyouを付け足して、To tell you the truthとも言います。reputation「評判」、incompetent「無能な」。
3. Strange to sayで「不思議な（奇妙な）ことに」の意味。do terribly on ～「～（出来が）ひどい」。「出来がいい」はdo wellと言います。
4. to say nothing of ～で「（もちろん）～は言うまでもない」の意味に。miserable「惨めな」。
