「７月には次の選挙が控えている」─ The next election is just around the corner in July.
「控えている」をjust around the corner「間近になっている」で表現。come up「やって来る」を使って、The next election is coming up in July.とも言えます。
（例）「次はニューヨークからの中継です」─ There's a live broadcast from New York coming up.

「その本を読んだ君の感想は？」─ Now that you've read the book, tell me what you thought. / What was your impression of that book?
「どう思ったか教えて（感想は？）」─ tell me what you thought
「印象」─ impression
「その映画の感想は？」─ How did you like the movie?
Extra Bit：「この本、あまり印象に残らなかったな」─ This book didn't leave much of an impression on me.
